	︎ ABOUTfield of study is the design practice of Trevor Embury—a second-generation Canadian settler, graphic designer, educator, researcher, and learner. His practice engages both theoretical and practical modes of inquiry to explore designing as an embodied and relational mode of thought and action, understanding it not as a bounded disciplinary activity but as a constitutive force in the ongoing shaping of human becoming. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; His work engages with the technical horizon within which we are designed artificial—an architecture of systems, infrastructures, and algorithmic and computational processes that increasingly reconfigures the conditions through which perception, memory, judgment, action, and desire are formed and experienced.

		<description>
	︎ STATEMENT
“All things, natural and artificial, have configuration. That is they are physically structured, and through that structuring enabled to act in certain ways. Design is nothing more, or less, than the act of (re)configuring. Design (re)-configures and therefore re-directs how things act.” (Dilnot, 2015)

We are designed artificial. We live within a technical horizon—an artificiality that increasingly reconfigures the conditions under which our existence is structured and experienced. Public discourse, social relations, and the collective imagination are shaped—if not displaced—by its aesthetic, algorithmic, predictive, and computational logics. This is not simply an instrumental phenomenon; it quietly reorganizes how thought is constituted, how action is oriented, and how meaning circulates. Bernard Stiegler names this condition the proletarianisation of knowledge, wherein capacities for thinking, remembering, and judging are progressively exteriorized and automated—capacities that were once exercised as autonomous acts of a self, and that now, rather than being exercised, are simply had. Our continued participation in—and designing for—the technical horizon renders these transformations both permissible and pervasive.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
But to think this condition seriously requires thinking it out of designing, not merely about Design. Philosophies “of” a given concept—form, function, Design as noun—cannot think, because they remain philosophies of already-settled terms. What is needed instead is a thinking that proceeds from what designing does and how it thinks: designing understood not as a profession or a style but as a mode of truth, a form of thought-acting.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
Thought-acting names a specific capacity: the reflective apprehension of a situation’s limits and possibilities, a perception of a lack of relation translated into affirmative intervention. To design is to configure—to propose a new set of relations that mediates what was previously irreconcilable, dispensing with certain pre-existing assumptions in order to introduce what Alain Badiou calls novelties. This is designing’s agency: not the solving of problems but the reorganization of a situation’s very terms. It is why the technical horizon does not merely mediate experience but conditions what can be sensed, known, and acted upon in the first place, altering us not only through the worlds it constructs but through the conditions of perception and action it establishes. What is at stake in this conditioning is nothing less than the possibility of autonomous action: a layer that organizes what can be noticed, understood, and desired inevitably prefigures the field of action before we can act within it.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
Trevor Embury’s work takes up this condition as its proper subject, and within it, a concern for what remains of human agency. It treats designing—as verb, not noun—as the primary means by which the technical horizon is extended, arranged, and sustained, attending to what ordinarily recedes from view: promised satisfiers, data infrastructures, algorithmic classifications, and the inertias that stabilize technical arrangements. These are not incidental effects but the ordinary work of mediation—and mediation, for designing, is ultimately a question not of subject and object but of persons-world relations: relations in which a person’s capacity to act deliberately, rather than merely execute a “suggestion,” is what remains to be secured. Embury’s practice is negotiative: at once critical and affirmative, holding these positions in productive tension rather than treating them as opposites. He calls for a reorientation to designing that engages the technical horizon not as a field of identifiable problems to be solved, but as a set of conditions within which possibilities for convivial action emerge—toward forms of relation in which other ways of acting, being, and dwelling might remain possible.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
This reorientation is pursued through practices that cultivate judgment rather than simply produce new methods of intervention. Central to this is the interval: the pause between perception and action in which what is already present can be attended to before deciding what should be done. It creates space for reflection, cultivating discernment around what is needed, what is enough, and what might be better left alone. The interval is therefore not an interruption to designing but a productive condition of it, opening intervention to making, repairing, maintaining, removing, waiting, refusing, or refraining.

Put plainly:

We are not simply users of technology; we are formed by it. Aesthetic, algorithmic, predictive, and computational systems increasingly shape how we perceive, think, remember, judge, and act.Technological systems increasingly perform capacities that were once exercised by us. Remembering, judging, selecting, anticipating, and deciding are progressively externalized and automated. What was once an activity we performed becomes something that is increasingly performed for us.This condition cannot be adequately understood by thinking only about “Design.” Design as a profession, discipline, or established body of principles treats Design as a settled object of thought. What is required instead is to think from designing—from the activity itself and from what that activity does.Designing is a form of thought-acting. It apprehends the limits and possibilities of a situation and intervenes by establishing new relations. Designing therefore does not simply solve problems; it changes the conditions through which a situation can be perceived, understood, and acted upon.Because designing configures conditions, it is never neutral. It participates in determining what can be sensed, known, understood, desired, and acted upon. Designing is therefore not merely something that operates within the technical horizon; it is one of the activities through which that horizon is produced, extended, and sustained.The work makes these conditions perceptible. It brings into view what normally recedes within technical arrangements: data infrastructures, algorithmic classifications, promised satisfiers, predictive systems, and the inertias that stabilize existing arrangements.Perception makes judgment possible, and judgment makes agency possible. We cannot deliberately question or change conditions that we cannot perceive or apprehend. Making the conditions of mediation perceptible creates the possibility for reflection, allowing us to consider what is needed, what is enough, and what might be better left alone.The interval provides a condition for this judgment. It is the pause between perception and action in which what is already present can be attended to before deciding what should be done. The interval interrupts the imperative to immediately intervene and creates space for more deliberate action.The central question is whether designing can be otherwise. The aim is not to escape the technical horizon, but to develop a more deliberate and reflexive form of designing—one that makes its own conditions visible, cultivates judgment, and enables other forms of intervention, including making, repairing, maintaining, removing, waiting, refusing, or refraining.

⌖As an educator, Trevor Embury is committed to creating learning environments where students actively engage with material by questioning, applying, and reflecting on concepts, whereby these processes become pathways to personal and intellectual growth. This pedagogical philosophy aligns with the ideas of John Dewey, who emphasized that learning is most effective when individuals actively participate in shaping their understanding of the world through hands-on engagement, problem-identifying, and critical thinking—more succinctly, ‘learning by doing’.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Embury recognizes the importance of guiding learning as a quest for (re)discovery, (re)imagination, and (un)/(re)learning. As a result, this quest becomes inherently collaborative, extending not only the field of action but also the field of possibilities. Inspired by the works of scholars such as Anne-Marie Willis, Leroy Little Bear, Ezio Manzini, bell hooks, and Clive Dilnot, this approach empowers individuals to unpack the function of design in society, giving rise to a progressive praxis for (re)shaping and (un)/(re)making.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; His teaching approach is interdisciplinary and collaborative, weaving philosophical engagement and pluralistic perspectives that blend worldviews with a keen interest in where design needs to become.

︎︎︎Project: Ikebana studies as a practice for reorienting how designing thinks and acts through the interval. It begins with attention—pausing to notice what is already present before deciding what should be made. This interval between perception and action creates space for reflection, allowing qualities, relationships, tensions, and possibilities to be considered before intervention. Through selection, arrangement, removal, and restraint, judgment develops around what is needed, what is enough, and what might be better left alone. The interval is therefore not an interruption but a productive part of designing: a space where intervention might mean making, repairing, maintaining, removing, waiting, refusing, or refraining.Type: Design Inquiry.

︎︎︎Project: Drawing on Bernard Stiegler’s Technics and Time, 1: The Fault of Epimetheus, I use these objects to think through a central design question, what does it mean to be designed artificial. Rather than treating design as the production of discrete tools, objects should be read as designing configurations through which we have been shaped. The flint handaxe figures as an originary condition of the designed artificial, a technical form through which gesture, anticipation, and memory are exteriorized into matter, inaugurating what Stiegler names epiphylogenesis, the exteriorization of memory that makes human temporality possible. The cuneiform clay tablet marks a further articulation of the designed artificial, in which memory becomes grammatised through inscription, reorganizing how knowledge, authority, and historical consciousness are designed to persist beyond embodied practice. The printing press intensifies this condition by mechanizing inscription and enabling the mass reproducibility of texts, redesigning cognition, education, and collective memory through standardization and scale. The early digital computer exemplifies a contemporary threshold of the designed artificial, in which memory, perception, and decision making are increasingly delegated to technical systems, producing new modes of individuation alongside the risk of cognitive and cultural proletarianization. Taken together, these objects do not form a linear history of technological progress, but a sequence of design moments through which the artificial actively configures the conditions of human experience, clarifying what it has meant, and continues to mean, to be designed artificial.Type: Design inquiry.

The question assumes that design no longer operates only at the level of discrete artifacts, but at the level of background conditions, shaping the horizons within which experience, action, and even perception take place. In this sense, artificiality is not encountered as a contrast to nature, but as the medium through which nature itself is known, organized, and acted upon. To be “designed artificial” is therefore not simply to be made, but to be made within systems whose technical, economic, and epistemic logics precede and exceed individual intention. Framed this way, the question unsettles inherited distinctions between nature and artifice, autonomy and control, and the given and the made. It invites inquiry into how artificial conditions are historically produced, technically maintained, and unevenly distributed, and how they come to be experienced as normal, inevitable, or even invisible. To be designed artificial is not necessarily to be fully determined, but to inhabit a world in which design operates diffusely, through infrastructures, models, standards, and interfaces that configure possibilities without announcing themselves as design. The question thus presses beyond evaluative judgments of design toward a more fundamental concern, namely how modes of designing participate in the shaping of being itself, and what ethical and political responsibilities emerge when artificiality becomes the horizon rather than the exception.Type: Design inquiry.

︎︎︎Project: In the spirit of Edmund Carpenter’s They Became What They Beheld and Douglas Coupland’s Slogans for the 21st Century, this work, part of a series, warns that our tools do not merely extend human capacities; they remake us, enfolding perception and subjectivity into their operative logics until the boundary between witnessing and becoming quietly collapses. The text, originally phrased as “Daddy, are we alive or on tape?”, presses the question of whether our sense of “life” has already migrated into the glowing surfaces that mediate it. The billboard functions simultaneously as stage and mirror, a site where this shift becomes perceptible. This work is conceptual and lives within the realm of the digital image.
Type: Billboard concept (digital image).

︎︎︎Project: The White Cliffs by Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke inspired an image shaped by themes of disappearance, dislocation, and irreversible change—echoing the planetary pressures that define our time. In response to the song’s stark, elegiac tone, the image captures a landscape in the midst of unraveling: a place once known, now slipping away. The white cliffs stand not only as geological markers but as thresholds—between human and machine, memory and erasure. Influenced by the song’s atmosphere and lyrical ambiguity, the work visualizes the slow encroachment of artificial systems and the hollowing-out of the human, suggesting a world quietly reshaped by forces beyond our control.Type: Illustration

︎︎︎Project: How can designers become more conscientious of their actions and of the consequences of their actions? Are there tools available to support this thinking, encouraging holistic approaches, mindfulness, and transformative changes in their design processes? How might incorporating Indigenous insights into design frameworks like Otto Scharmer’s Theory U shift shortsighted outputs into holistic, sustainable, and regenerative prototypes that align with Indigenous knowledge, engage communities, and promote resilience and well-being? This adapted framework (v_1.0) emphasizes the importance of Indigenous partnerships and processes that involve co-initiating (engaging), co-sensing (deep observation), co-presencing (connecting to the deepest source of inspiration), co-creating (prototyping and implementing ideas), and co-evolving (reflecting).Type: Diagram.

Our norms, beliefs, and values make up a collective consciousness, or a shared way of understanding and behaving in the world. What in fact human beings do most is to squander the functional and aesthetic value of things and then discard them. In the majority of situations, there is no further metamorphosis of transformation—effectively, the process of consumption stops and the surplus of waste grows. Eight months later, the advent of the iPod incarnated a whole new social routine of playing and listening to recorded music. The iTunes Store opened its virtual doors in 2003, followed by its successor, Apple Music, in 2015. Handpicked Artists/Recent Recommendations serves as a musical map created by the For You algorithm, a collection of artists—from Goldie (2001) to Oneohtrix Point Never (2019).Type: Printed poster.

Virtual Resident, New Spaces Seen tells a different story about the city of Tokyo. A story of a cyberflanuer—moving a cursor around a screen—wandering the streets and paths within the virtual landscape of Google Street View. Virtual Resident, New Spaces Seen, 2019 are two 5 min, 25 sec projected videos that capture not only the physical and social aspects of the city but the interface that bridges two worlds; the real world of things and people and the mediated, virtual world of data owned by Google. In addition, the work reveals the unusual logic of the software, which renders the automated data flow from countless different sources into a seamless panoptic image of a place. Accompanying these videos is a modified section of music originally composed by Brian Eno entitled New Spaces, which attempts to immerse the viewer into the visual storytelling of the videos while simultaneously creating a space for reflection. The work aims to create a space to discuss new methods for urban storytelling and to present alternative forms of documentation.Type: Video. Installation, UIC, Chicago, USA.

︎︎︎Project: Technology, according to Heidegger must be understood as “a way of revealing” (Heidegger 1977, 12). Revealing is one of the terms Heidegger developed in order to make it possible to think what, according to him, is not thought anymore. It is his translation of the Greek word alètheuein, which means ‘to discover’—to uncover what was covered over—to reveal. Images are screen captures from the Wall Street Journal.

︎︎︎Project: In The Cyborg Manifesto, Donna Haraway writes about "the unified human subject of identity which has shifted to the hybridized posthuman of technoscience from, "representation" to "simulation" and "reproduction" to "replication.” The transformative effects of early technology and its impact on future technologies, including possible fusions between animal and machine. This speculation on a so-called technological mutation or infection pushes beyond the limitations of traditional typographic form, one step at a time. What happens when a typeface wants to perform in various ways using flexibilities not intended by its original construction? This look at a hybridized replication of Avenir hints at its potential expandability by visualizing its structural makeup.Type: Digital typography study.

︎︎︎Project: Inciting Heterotopia, 2019, explored the fluid and multilayered nature of reality in the digital age. The project examined the dynamic interplay between the tangible and intangible, emphasizing how digital environments shape and mediate perception. Drawing on the concept of heterotopia, the work interrogated the shifting boundaries between illusion and reality, particularly in the contexts of platforms such as Google and Facebook. By framing these digital spaces as heterotopic sites—simultaneously real and virtual, ordered and destabilized—the project critically analyzed their role in constructing and influencing contemporary experience.Type: Printed fabric (digital).

	︎ COUNTERFORMS: Practices, Theories, and Methods A public lecture series that explores the complexities of design across its various modalities, from practice and activism to discipline and ways of knowing, and beyond.
⌖⌖

The term counterform is typically associated with negative space in design, but it can also be metaphorically extended to the exploration of new ways of thinking. In this broader sense, counterforms represent the spaces and ideas that challenge and redefine existing concepts and norms—much like how negative space in design defines and shapes positive elements.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; By exploring counterforms, one engages with the gaps, contradictions, and oppositional ideas that provoke new perspectives and innovative approaches. This practice emphasizes the importance of considering what is not immediately apparent or conventional, thereby sparking imagination and intellectual growth.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; In this context, counterforms symbolize the underlying structures and voids within existing paradigms, encouraging a deeper examination of what lies beyond the obvious and prompting a rethinking of established beliefs and practices.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Counterforms was initiated by Trevor Embury in 2024. It has since evolved into a collaboration with Marcia Higuchi and continues as a space for soft, systemic activism.

		<description>︎ WRITING

—Designing a Design School can be read here.

This essay reflects on a year-long review of a university graphic design program to ask a broader question: what does it mean to design a design school? It argues that design education is itself a designed artifact—shaped by implicit values, assumptions, and philosophies that are rarely examined directly. Drawing on the urgency of climate change, artificial intelligence, and global instability, the piece contends that twentieth-century assumptions about industrial production and stable career paths no longer fit the realities students will face.

It calls for design schools to move beyond teaching problem-solving toward cultivating critical and contextual inquiry, asking not just how to improve something but why it exists and who it serves. It advocates for pluralism—incorporating non-Western and Indigenous knowledge systems—alongside ecological literacy and a clear institutional vision that the school itself embodies, not just promotes. Rather than preparing students for the world as it is, the essay argues design education should prepare them to participate in shaping the world as it could be, treating curriculum design as an ongoing act of designing otherwise.

—The Soft Infrastructure of Feeling Free can be read here.
Designed interfaces are not the site where political conditions are expressed—they are the soft infrastructure through which those conditions are reproduced at the level of the body. This essay proposes two concepts for thinking that mechanism precisely: the aesthetic form of inertia, which describes how apparent movement conceals structural stasis; and pseudo-smooth space, which describes how platforms simulate open, intensive experience over an infrastructure that is maximally striated and deliberately concealed. Together they name a single designed operation—the elimination of productive friction—whose persistence is economically necessary and whose visibility the platform is designed to prevent. The smooth surface must feel like freedom. That feeling is the mechanism of control.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; ⌖&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; ⌖

—Thinking Through Intervention: Design, History, and the Artificial can be read here.
This essay reconsiders Clive Dilnot’s concept of thinking through intervention to address a critical gap in design theory: the lack of a reflexive, historically attuned framework for understanding design’s role as historical agency. I argue that intervention—understood as both an epistemological and ontological act—offers a speculative, pluriversal, and ethical mode of engaging with contemporary complexity. Extending Dilnot’s framework, I integrate decolonial perspectives and pedagogical concerns to propose that intervention must be understood not only as a historical force but also as a situated and relational practice. Drawing on critical and interdisciplinary perspectives, I contend that design’s agency lies not in solving problems but in reconfiguring relations among people, ecologies, and futures—demanding a pedagogical reorientation toward care, accountability, and situated world-making. This requires a shift from seeing design merely in history—as a practice unfolding within given historical contexts—to understanding design as history, actively constituting the trajectories, relations, and conditions through which history itself is made.

(TSPS)..., is a manifesto of sorts for design and our collective future.&#38;nbsp;TSPS is far from revolutionary or exhaustive—if anything, it serves to instigate a conversation to help build imagination or capacity to think within and beyond our present moment. TSPS is part of a larger body of work which examines the role of the conventional practice of design and traditional design curriculum under conditions of unsustainability.⌱Design as a conventional practice is problematic, it offers few solutions.

⌱Design should encompass a new circulation of thinking and acting.

⌱Design should look beyond capitalist/modernist agendas.
⌱Design is more than a tool for the benefits of the commercial sector.
⌱Design as a conventional practice is inherently exclusionary.
⌱Design is ALWAYS political, never innocent.
⌱Design should understand its ontological dimensions.
⌱Design as a conventional practice sustains unsustainability.
⌱Design is entirely social.
⌱Design should consider the potential of undesign.
⌱Design and technology are indivisible.
⌱Design should be a practical and intellectual project for transformation.The conventional practice of design&#38;nbsp;is defined by the standardized and systematized practices commonly employed in the field of design focused on the planned production of images, signs, symbols, objects, and experiences operating in the service of commerce acting on client instruction. The conventional practice of design, along with its traditional disciplinary knowledge, is a product and service of its historical relationship with the interests of capitalism and the development of technologies. The use of &#38;nbsp;the term conventional practice refers to an attitude about design activities, behaviours, or procedures that seem habitual within the field. Within the context of the conventional practice of design, the term is used specifically to underscore this attitude and or cultural value system—the prevailing normative perspectives shaping the understanding of design within both academic curricula and commercial contexts.
Global change is defined by changes in the global environment (including alterations in climate, land productivity, oceans or other water resources, atmospheric chemistry, and ecological systems) that may alter the capacity of the Earth to sustain life. https://nap.nationalacademies.org/read/13330/chapter/5
