field of study is the design practice of Trevor Embury—a second-generation Canadian settler, graphic designer, researcher, educator, and learner. His practice is situated within the concept of graphic design and actively engages relationships between pluralistic perspectives, interdisciplinary collaboration, and making things visible. His practice focuses on the political project of design—design’s entanglement within a techno-social system and its effects. His work aims to problematize, speculate, and visualize notions of agency, congruency, history, instrumentalism, and mediation for reorientation beyond current forms of practice.
He is currently Assistant Professor in the Graphic and Digital Design department at the University of the Fraser Valley and independently researching within the areas of design philosophy and the contemporary human condition. Additionally, he is the organizer for Counterforms, public seminar series and design director for Tangram Academic Journal UFV Press. He has taught at OCAD University, University of Illinois Chicago, and Alberta University of the Arts and has presented work both nationally and internationally at a variety of academic and professional venues including OCAD University, Tokyo Design Week, Dubai Design Week, and the Chicago Art Book Fair. He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physical Geography from the University of Calgary and a Master of Design (MDes) in Graphic Design from the School of Design, University of Illinois Chicago with the Basel School of Design.
